The call for projects 2016 of the Nexans Foundation ended April 8, 2016. We received 89 projects related to access to electricity, from all continents. The Selection Committee and the Board of Directors of the Foundation will meet by the end of April to select the best of them. The choice will be difficult! We will keep you informed of the results in early May.

Our Foundation has just given its support to the NPO Un Enfant par la Main (A Child by the Hand) for its project of housing reconstruction in Nepal, hit by two earthquakes on April 25 and May 12, 2015. Un Enfant par la Main has indeed decided to support his partner ChildFund in Nepal. The latest report of June 17, directed by the Ministry of Interior of Nepal states: 8,792 deaths including 2,277 children, 22,311 injured, over 500,000 houses destroyed and nearly 281,200 houses damaged. According to the UN, despite international humanitarian aid, 2.8 million people need assistance for food, shelter or medical care. To best meet the immediate needs of the victims of this disaster, Un Enfant par la Main and ChildFund Alliance’s partners provided tarpaulins protective canvas (12mx18m) to 2,688 homes, floor mats to 3,111 homes and have distributed food twice.

The "Energy for Life Burkina" project aims to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of 6 communes of Burkina Faso. In each of these 6 communes, 2 villages were selected to access a better quality of life: energy availability, increase in production capacity, improvement of people and municipalities’ incomes, etc.

11 new projects for the Nexans Foundation in 2015

The Selection Committee and the Board of Directors of the Foundation met in May and June 2015 to choose the 2015 projects of the Foundation. Of the 63 projects submitted from around the world, 11 were selected. These electrification projects are located mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia and France.

The purpose of this project, supported by our Foundation and conducted by the NGO Codegaz, was to equip the Health Care and Social Welfare Center (CSPS, including a maternity ward) of Tiogo Mossi with a photovoltaic power system, as this village located 10 km away from Koudougou is not connected to any power grid. Until then, care had thus to be provided by candlelight after 6 pm.

There were many people at the inauguration of Mkanssa Apprentice Training Center in Morocco on February 10! Inaugurated in the presence of Mr Abdelaâdim Guerrouj, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, this project is the realization of a partnership between the Moroccan Association L’Heure Joyeuse and the European Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD) started one year ago. Funded by Nexans' Foundation, the project also had the support of the French Development Agency, Schneider Electric Morocco, the Schneider Electric Foundation, the Department of the Monegasque Cooperation and the Lord Michelham of Hellingly Foundation.

Electricians without borders (ESF) was requested by the Development Association of Ipamu farmers (village in the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo) to electrify the referral hospital in the region, as well as educational institutions, boarding schools and accommodation of health care and education staffs. The main objective of the project is to contribute to improving the living conditions of the population and access to education and health care. This project is a continuation of the first work made by ESF in January 2014 as part of a first phase, namely the construction of a first backbone network and the connection of the hospital (see picture).

Hai Ly commune in Vietnam is one of the six coastal communes and towns of Hai Hau district where the people are frequently and severely affected by typhoons and other climate related hazards as it has hollow terrain with 100% of its area below sea level. It is also located in the coastal border area with 3.2 km of sea dike. The commune has a total area of 594.4ha and a population of 9,852 people (see map below).

In Southeast Mali, Konséguéla is a rural community of 30,000 residents. Its inhabitants are suffering from rising fuel prices, only energy available for economic activities. This project led by Geres aims to fight against energy insecurity and improve the living conditions of the town through the delivering of electricity to the local economic development.

French students in Madagascar to electrify a school

For this project, ten students from different specialties (electrical engineering, metalwork, woodwork) of the Secondary School “Lycée du Chablais” located in Thonon les Bains (France) will realize the construction of buildings and electrification of a Malagasy school, under the supervision of their teachers. They will be helped by young Malagasy, in charge of finding the necessary equipment for this work (metal tubes, wood, paint, cement, etc.).

The project consists in providing, using photovoltaic panels, the electrification of two orphanages located in the villages of Naogon in Benin (50 children) and Akodessewa in Togo (30 children). The electrification of the orphanage in Togo is already complete: the dormitory, the refectory and classroom are now lighted at night, which not only improves the children’s quality of life but also secures the orphanage, especially against animal intrusions.

The NGO “Ouverture au Tiers Monde” works mainly in Madagascar, where it operates two centers for children, mostly orphans. The center of the isolated Ambatofotsy village has a school, where 536 children study from kindergarten to graduation, and a dispensary.

During the summer of 2014, the NGO Humanisol, supported by our Foundation, will conduct the electrification of a school for underprivileged children in Varanasi, India, by installing photovoltaic panels on the roof of the school. Currently the school has only one generator, a precarious mode of supply.

In collaboration with Caritas Switzerland and the University of Applied Sciences Berne, Antenna Technologies has developed a solar lighting system with many advantages. This new product, supported by the Nexans Foundation, called OOLUX represents a real alternative to kerosene lamps. Its system of micro-financing makes it affordable, meeting the needs of consumers at the base of the income pyramid.

The Selection Committee and the Board of Directors of the Foundation met in May and June 2014. 11 projects were selected. They concern mainly electrification projects of villages, schools, orphanages, health centers, located primarily in Africa: Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Morocco, Benin, Madagascar, Congo and Uganda. We also support an electrification project in India and, as part of our partnership with the Château de Versailles, we will participate in the "18th at the root of Design" exhibition at the end of the year. We will inform you in detail of all these new projects after the meetings with our new partners.

A nice Christmas gift for the children of the Blengoua and Gonido schools in Mali: the electrification project of their schools was completed earlier than expected. Classrooms now have light, which allows students to do their homework and receive tutoring in the evening. As Typhoon Haiyan unfolded in the central Philippines, the Nexans Foundation expresses its solidarity and would like to allocate a special grant in the amount of 50,000 euros for " Electricians without borders" (ESF), a non-governmental organization, in order to provide sustainable assistance to the victims of the disaster. This allocation aims to support the humanitarian assistance programs for the refugees through the construction of a temporary accommodation village. The initiative will as well provide access to energy and water supplies. The village will accommodate up to 2,000 people.
